Checkered Dress Girl Christmas Ornament Series XI. Box 11

4½” high and 3½” wide

1960

Multinational

Cloth and mixed medium

This doll is a Multinational Company doll created in the 1960’s for a Christmas ornament. This doll is dressed in a checked outfit and represents the stereotypical “pickaninny” child image. The doll is a female with a chubby body frame, dark skin, red lips, and wild hair. This image was not uncommon in the 1960’s before the civil rights movement for people from an African Diaspora.
